The Independence Era

Busy Jakarta city

The third and current era is called the independence era. This is when Batavia achieved independence from the Dutch. To celebrate this, the Indonesian nationalists changed the countries name to Jakarta which it has been to this day. This all happened after World War II and was the start of a grand mega city.

In 1966 Jakarta was declared a “special region” (equivalent to our state) and therefore was treated as it’s own region. Jakarta first started it’s economic boom when  Lieutenant General Ali Sadikin served as governer and stayed that way until 1997 when violence and protest  sent Jakarta downhill. After 4 days of riots and killings the president resigned and Jakarta started to return to normal.
